Anchor text is the clickable part of a link, and it is doing more work than most site owners realise. Google reads it as a description of the destination page, written by someone other than the page’s owner. That makes it one of the most trusted relevance signals in SEO, and one of the easiest to get wrong.
In the code, it is simply the text between the tags:
<a href=”https://hautelab.agency/marketing/”>escort SEO services</a>
Here, “escort SEO services” is the anchor. A reader knows what they are clicking. Google knows what the destination is about. Both without opening the page.
The types that matter
Guides list up to ten anchor varieties. Six cover everything you will meet in practice, shown here with adult-sector examples:
- Exact match: “elite london escorts” pointing at a page targeting exactly that term.
- Partial match: “an elite agency in London” pointing at the same page.
- Branded: your agency’s name. The backbone of any natural profile.
- Naked URL: the address itself, pasted as the link.
- Generic: “this guide”, “their website”. Weak as a signal, natural in moderation.
- Image alt: when an image is the link, its alt text is the anchor.
The ratio conversation
Since the Penguin update in 2012, anchor text has cut both ways. It still passes relevance, but an unnatural distribution is one of the clearest manipulation footprints Google has. Real profiles are dominated by branded and URL anchors, with commercial phrases scattered thinly. Bought-link profiles are the mirror image: exact-match commercial anchors stacked high, because that is what the buyer paid for.
This bites harder in our niche. Cheap adult link packages lean on exactly the anchors (“london escorts”, city + service phrases) that spam systems are tuned for, and an attack aimed at your site will use the same ones deliberately. Watch your distribution in any backlink tool and treat a swelling exact-match segment you did not build as a warning, not a win.

Internal anchors: the part you fully control
Inbound anchors depend on other people. Internal ones are all yours, and the same rules apply with none of the risk. Describe the destination plainly, never “click here”. And run one discipline we apply on every site we manage: a keyword-match anchor points only at the page that owns that keyword. One page owns “escort agency SEO“; every internal link using that phrase points there and nowhere else. It is the simplest cannibalisation insurance there is.
Getting it right
Anchor text sits inside the wider link discipline: why links carry the weight they do, what makes an individual link worth having, and how link attributes change what passes. Get the anchors right on top of those and your profile reads the way Google wants it to read: like nobody engineered it.
If your anchor distribution already looks engineered, whether you built it or someone built it at you, we can help you unwind it.
