Two numbers decide whether a keyword deserves your effort, and search volume is the less important one. Volume tells you how many people type a phrase. It says nothing about whether any of them will book. In a sector where one client can be worth four figures, that distinction is the whole game.
What search volume actually tells you
Search volume is a tool’s estimate of monthly searches for a phrase. Estimate is the operative word: run the same keyword through Ahrefs, Semrush and Google’s own Keyword Planner and you will get three different numbers, sometimes wildly different. The only accurate volume data you will ever see is in Search Console, after you already rank in the top three, when impressions show you the real demand.
So treat volume as a rough sorting signal. Hundreds versus tens matters. 320 versus 210 does not.
Traffic potential: the better number
A page never ranks for one keyword. A well-built page ranks for dozens of variants, and the traffic it earns is the sum of all of them. That sum is traffic potential, and the quickest way to gauge it is to look up the current top result for your target term in any SEO tool and read its total organic traffic, not its traffic for that one phrase.
A term showing 90 monthly searches whose top page pulls 700 visits a month is hiding a family of variants. A term showing 500 whose top page pulls 200 is a dead end wearing a big number.
The conversion lens
Here is the adjustment that matters most in this sector: weight every term by how likely its searcher is to become a client. Thirty searches a month for “elite companion knightsbridge” are worth more to an agency than three thousand for a general information query, because the thirty are choosing and the three thousand are browsing.
Specificity is the tell. A location, a qualifier (“elite”, “luxury”, “discreet”), a service style, a time element: each one added to a query shrinks the volume and raises the intent. When you must choose between a big vague number and a small specific one, take the small one. Your diary will agree.
The working method
- Pull volumes for your candidate terms in whichever tool you have. Use them to sort, not to decide.
- Check the top result’s total traffic for each term to see real potential.
- Score each term for booking intent: location, qualifiers, specificity.
- Confirm the intent matches the page you plan to build.
- Once you rank, replace every estimate with Search Console’s real impressions and re-rank your targets.
Where this fits
Volume analysis is one leg of a three-legged stool. Finding terms you can win is the first. Weighing their real worth, this article, is the second. And knowing why the volume column deserves the least trust of all is the third. Together they produce a target list built on what converts, which is the only kind worth ranking for.
