2026 SEO and AI Roadmap for Adult-facing Websites

2026 SEO and AI Roadmap for Adult-facing Websites

From Google Search’s perspective, optimising for generative AI search is still SEO. Google says so in its guide to generative AI features, which it published on 15 May 2026. Pew Research Center’s 2025 study of US adults found people click fewer result links when an AI summary appears. Google calls its AI summaries AI Overviews.

For an escort agency or adult site, the 2026 roadmap has four jobs, in this order:

  1. Make sure Google can read your site and has the signals to classify it correctly.
  2. Build pages that a client needs to visit before they book.
  3. Earn relevant links and build a brand people search for.
  4. Measure enquiries as well as clicks.

Google also says you can ignore llms.txt files and chopping pages into chunks. Its change log records that FAQ rich results stopped showing on 7 May 2026.

What AI answers do to clicks

The Pew Research Center tracked the browsing of 900 US adults in March 2025. On results pages with an AI summary, people clicked a normal result link in 8% of visits. Without a summary, they did so in 15% of visits. Only 1% of visits with a summary clicked a link inside it.

Pew also found that summaries cluster on longer and question-style searches. A summary appeared for 8% of one- and two-word searches and 53% of searches of ten words or more. It appeared for 60% of searches that began with who, what, when or why.

Ahrefs compared 300,000 keywords using Search Console data from December 2023 and December 2025. It found that an AI Overview correlated with a 58% lower click-through rate for the top-ranking page. That is a forecast-based estimate from desktop data. Ahrefs published it on 4 February 2026.

Google’s AI features page says clicks from pages with AI Overviews are higher quality. It defines that as users being more likely to spend more time on the site, and gives no figure.

The Pew and Ahrefs studies do not separate adult-sector searches. Pew measured US adults in 2025, and Ahrefs does not split its figures by sector. Neither tells you how much of your own drop comes from AI summaries.

Check your own terms. Search your five most important queries on a phone and a laptop. Record the date and device, and note whether an AI answer appears. Then set that record against your clicks and impressions in Search Console.

Answer engine optimisation is SEO

Answer engine optimisation (AEO) and generative engine optimisation (GEO) name work aimed at AI answers. For Google Search, the guide says this work is “optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO”.

To appear as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, Google’s guide gives three conditions. Google must index the page. The page must be eligible to show in Google Search with a snippet. And your site must be included in Search generative AI features in Search Console.

Include is the default, and a property with a parent property inherits the parent’s choice. Choosing Exclude in the Search generative AI control removes your links and content from these features. You then receive no impressions or traffic from them. Google’s older AI features page, last updated in December 2025, lists only the first two conditions.

Google’s guide lists what you can ignore, and its change log adds one more:

You can skipWhat Google says
llms.txt filesGoogle Search ignores them.
Splitting pages into chunksThere is no requirement to break content into tiny pieces for AI.
Rewriting pages for AI systemsAI systems understand synonyms, so you do not need every long-tail variation.
Inauthentic mentions across the webThey are not as helpful as they might seem.
Special structured dataGenerative AI search does not require it. Keep it where it earns a rich result.
FAQ rich resultsThey no longer appear in Google Search, from 7 May 2026.

Two pieces of answer-engine advice still hold, because they are plain good SEO.

Put the answer first. Open each page with the answer to the question that brought the visitor, then add the detail. Google’s test for a page is a question: “Is this content that my visitors would find satisfying?”

Start from the questions your clients ask. Take them from your enquiry inbox and your Search Console queries. Answer them in visible text on the page. For Very High End, our work included client FAQs that answer real booking questions.

Google updates since December 2025

Google’s Search Status Dashboard lists three core updates and four spam updates since December 2025. It also lists a February 2026 Discover update, which the table leaves out.

These dates come from Google’s Search Status Dashboard. A date alone does not show cause. Our December 2025 update guide shows how to match a drop to an update window.

Step 1: let Google read and classify your site

Start here, because a wrong classification or a blocked crawl limits every later step.

SafeSearch can filter your whole site

Google’s guidelines for explicit content list what SafeSearch aims to filter, meaning results that lead to visual depictions. The list includes nudity, photo-realistic sex toys and “sex-oriented dating or escort services”.

Google names escort services in that list, and its guidelines offer no way to opt a category out. Its systems use machine learning and signals from a page’s text, images, videos and links.

What happens next depends on the searcher’s setting. Google’s help page says Blur is the default unless Filter applies. Blur blurs explicit images but still shows explicit text and links when they are relevant. Filter is the default only where Google’s systems indicate the user may be under 18.

An administrator can lock a device or network to Filter, and some public Wi-Fi networks enforce SafeSearch. The page adds that settings vary by country or territory under local law. It gives no separate UK default.

You control how you build the site. Two of Google’s best practices apply to a site that mixes explicit and non-explicit pages.

First, if you have significant amounts of both, group explicit pages on a separate domain or subdomain. Without that, Google’s systems might judge the whole site explicit. They would then filter all of it under SafeSearch, including pages that are not explicit.

Second, add rating metadata to explicit pages. Google recognises `<meta name=”rating” content=”adult”>`. It says the tag is not necessary and recommends it for any page with sexually explicit content. The tag ensures SafeSearch filters the page, so use it on explicit pages only.

If your site has no explicit pages, neither applies. Check the age gate below instead.

If Google filters pages that are not explicit, start with Google’s troubleshooting guide.

If you list adult products in Google Shopping features, Google says to label them. Use the adult attribute in Merchant Center feeds, or hasAdultConsideration markup. Google says the label does not affect organic visibility. Our adult ecommerce page covers the retailer side.

Age gates should let Googlebot in

Google tells sites with an age gate to let Googlebot crawl without triggering it. You do that by verifying Googlebot requests and serving the content without the gate.

Google warns of two costs. Your site may rank poorly, because Google might not be able to fetch your content. That includes image and video bytes. Googlebot may also fail to see non-explicit content behind a gate. Google’s systems may then classify that content, or the whole site, as explicit. That makes it ineligible to appear when SafeSearch is on.

Ask whoever built your gate how it treats verified Googlebot requests. A gate that shows Googlebot the same screen as a visitor does what Google warns against. If you are rebuilding, put this in the brief for your website build.

Whether the law requires an age check on your site is a legal question. This guide does not answer it.

Step 2: build pages a client needs to visit

Google’s AI guide separates commodity content from non-commodity content. Commodity content often rests on common knowledge that “could originate from anyone”. Non-commodity content gives an expert or experienced take that goes beyond it.

A generic article on how to book an escort could come from anyone. Your own standards and booking process come from you alone.

Scaled content abuse sits at the other end. Google’s spam policies define it as generating many pages mainly to manipulate rankings. One of Google’s examples is using generative AI tools to produce many pages without adding value for users.

Google’s guidance on generative AI content says AI can help with research and with adding structure to original content. On client work, we use AI for research, data analysis and writing briefs. Our guide to using AI for an escort agency’s content covers the practical side.

Build or repair these pages, in this order:

  1. Audit what you have, then rewrite weak pages and blog content.
  2. Give each district that brings bookings its own location page, written for that district.
  3. Write client FAQs from real booking questions, in visible text.
  4. Publish your own standards and how booking works.

The Very High End case study shows what thin content costs. Through 2025, it says, a run of algorithm updates punished thin content across the sector. By December 2025, the agency’s monthly clicks had fallen to 1,455.

The work in the same case study included a full content audit and rewrites. It also included location pages, client FAQs and DR30+ authority links every month. By May 2026, monthly clicks had risen 236% from the December low. Average position had improved from 41 to 16, and impressions had roughly tripled.

One case does not isolate the cause. Google ran a spam update and a core update in March. Another core update began on 21 May. We cannot separate our work from them.

Step 3: earn relevant links and a brand people search for

Links still matter. Google’s ranking systems guide says PageRank “continues to be part of our core ranking systems”.

Google’s spam policies define link spam as creating links mainly to manipulate search rankings. Examples include buying or selling links for ranking purposes, excessive link exchanges and automated link creation.

Test any link by asking whether the site has real readers and genuine traffic. A link farm exists only to sell links and has neither. We build links on real websites with real readers, and we choose quality over volume.

Escorta is Italy’s largest Italian-language escort directory. In November 2024, a core update cost it 73% of its top-three rankings in Italy. Hostile backlinks then pushed its referring domains from under 1,000 to over 2,600 in one month.

In the Escorta case study, we acquired genuine authority links to outweigh the hostile ones. We also rebuilt the location-page strategy city by city. Average position improved from 12.6 to 7.2. Top-three rankings in Italy climbed back to within 9% of the pre-penalty peak. Links were one part of that work, so we do not credit them alone.

The second half of this step is a brand people search for. City Butterflies treated brand building as a long commitment. Its brand searches sat at position one in June 2026.

The August 2025 spam update put even strong positions under pressure. At its 2025 peak, the agency held position 2 for “elite london escorts”. In June 2026 it sat at position 4 for that term and position 3 for “new london escorts”.

The City Butterflies case study covers nearly ten years of brand building. It also covers a 2026 content audit that cleared thin pages. We kept acquiring niche-relevant authority links. Check your own brand searches in Search Console, as Step 4 explains.

Step 4: measure enquiries as well as clicks

Google’s two pages differ. The AI guide names a Generative AI performance report in Search Console. The older AI features page counts this traffic in the Performance report, under the Web search type. The Search generative AI control page points to the same Generative AI performance report. Check which your property shows.

Google also suggests tracking conversions and time on site in a tool such as Google Analytics. For booking-led businesses, an enquiry could be a form submission, call or message. Retailers can track purchases. Filter Search Console queries for your brand name to see whether people search for you directly.

Be wary of tools that claim to use Google’s internal metrics. Google says no third-party tool has access to its ranking or AI systems.

If your traffic drops

Diagnose before you add anything. Our guide to Google ranking drops sets out the five usual causes and how to tell them apart. If the drop came with links you never built, read our guide to negative SEO attacks on adult sites.

Plan in months. Our marketing page advises a 12-month minimum for a serious strategy. You may see movement in six months.
