Your competitor is probably not outranking you because of their content. You have read their content. The difference is nearly always the links, and a backlink gap analysis shows you exactly which ones: every site that links to them and not to you.
Done properly, it turns “we need more links” into a shopping list. Done badly, it sends you chasing links you can never earn and would not want. In the adult sector the difference between the two comes down to one decision made before you open a tool.
Compare like with like
Search your money terms and the results are a mix: directories, agencies, the odd magazine piece. The directories above you are not your competitors for this exercise. A directory’s link profile is built on thousands of listings, widgets and reciprocal links accumulated over a decade. An agency cannot copy it and should not try.
Pick the three or four sites like yours that outrank you: other agencies, or independents with strong sites if that is your market. Their gaps are real gaps. If a lifestyle magazine linked to them, it can link to you. That is the whole logic of the exercise, and it only holds when the comparison is fair.
Run the analysis
Every major tool has a version of this. Ahrefs calls it Link Intersect, Semrush calls it Backlink Gap; both take your domain plus your competitors and return the sites linking to them but not you. Export the lot, then work the list down:
- Cut the junk first: scraper domains, dead sites, anything with no traffic of its own.
- Flag the sites linking to two or more competitors. If they have linked to sites like yours twice, they are demonstrably open to the niche.
- Note how each link was earned: a mention in a listicle, a quote in an article, a directory entry, a guest piece. The how tells you the pitch.
Qualify before you chase
A gap list is raw ore, not a target list. Run the survivors through the same vetting you would give any prospect (our link quality checklist covers the checks: relevance, real traffic, spam score, anchor sanity). In this niche the list usually splits into three tiers: lifestyle and city publications worth real effort, adult-adjacent blogs worth a light pitch, and legacy junk your competitor picked up years ago that you should leave exactly where it is.
What remains is a prospecting list with proof of concept built in, and working it is a discipline of its own: our link prospecting guide covers the outreach side.
Why this is worth the afternoon
Links decide who owns page one in this sector, and a gap analysis is the fastest honest way to see what closing the distance will actually take. Sometimes the answer is twenty links. More often it is six good ones, because the competitor’s profile is thinner than their rankings suggest. Either way, you stop guessing.
We run this analysis at the start of every campaign, and the findings go straight into the client’s workbook. If you would rather see your gap than wonder about it, get in touch.
